Studies on customisation-driven digital music instruments

چکیده
From John Cage’s Prepared Piano to the turntable, the history of musical instruments is scattered with examples of musicians who deeply customised their instruments to fit personal artistic objectives, objectives that differed from the ones the instruments have been designed for. In their digital counterpart however, musical instruments are often presented in the form of closed, finalised systems with a-priori symbolic rules set by their designer that leave very little room for the artists to customise the technologies for their unique art practices; in these cases the only possibility to change the mode of interaction with digital instrument is to reprogram them, a possibility available to programmers but not to musicians. This thesis presents two digital music instruments designed with the explicit goal of being highly customisable by musicians and to provide different modes of interactions, whist keeping simplicity and immediateness of use. The first one leverages real-time gesture recognition to provide continuous feedback to users as guidance in defining the behaviour of the system and the gestures it recognises. The second one is a novel tangible user interface which allows to transform everyday objects into expressive digital music instruments and whose sound generated strongly depends by the particular nature of the physical object selected.

Computer-based approaches to music research
The digital information era has had a substantial impact on the way music is consumed and produced, and in a relatively short time has revolutionized the music industry and culture. For instance, music stores have almost disappeared, and have been replaced by digital shopping malls, digital music repositories, and social media networks. The mass digitization of music now offers opportunities to...
متن کاملDiscovering instruments in scores: a repertoire-driven approach to designing new interfaces for musical expression
This paper situates NIME practice with respect to models of social interaction among human agents. It argues that the conventional model of composer-performer-listener, and the underlying mid-20 century metaphor of music as communication upon which it relies, cannot reflect the richness of interaction and possibility afforded by interactive digital technologies. Building on Paul Lansky’s vision...

In the present article we observe the significations and the dimensions of interaction between instruments and performers in musical performance. Then, still within the realm of interaction, we describe some of the transmutations introduced by digital music instru...
